So, is this whole thing a bit over-designed for an under-5-liter sling? Some could definitely argue that the thick materials and somewhat chunky components are over the top. In our experience, though, the durability these materials bring to the table is well worth it—even for something small. You don’t have to be hauling 50 pounds of gear to want something that lasts. Made by San Francisco’s Aer, I spent the next 10 minutes wearing the day bag while I shopped, barely noticing it (empty, it weighs 0.7 pounds) as I moved through the store. Like a fanny pack, a plastic buckle attached to a nylon strap keeps the bag fastened around the body.

Fads aside, from our perspective you just can’t beat the functionality a sling offers when you need one. As if two upgrades weren’t enough, Aer swapped the plastic buckles for aircraft-grade aluminum tension locks. As I press the cold metal against my skin, I get goosebumps like an out-of-control bag hentai. These are the most solid-looking buckles I’ve seen on any bag, and this is coming from a guy who has way too many bags. Version two also has a stowaway pocket on the back, which allows you to hide the sling to turn it into an organization cube. While the sling is detachable, it isn’t easy to do so, and stuffing them into the stowaway pocket is much easier.

There has been one downside, which is that I haven’t been able to find a way of effectively storing a water bottle in the bag. The bag’s pouch is 15″ long, but it’s unwieldy to retrieve a bottle from it without pulling everything else in the bag out. This isn’t a dealbreaker, but it isn’t a strict upgrade from a light backpack if you plan on taking it hiking. Atom Sling 8L is a real piece of work, with an outdoor-friendly look using rugged recycled nylon made from post industrial waste fiber. No surprise its polyester is also derived from recycled material.

It’s also easy to alter shoulders or switch between positions to give one shoulder a break throughout the day. The strap of the Day Sling 2 is made from soft and adjustable webbing, with a clip on one end to easily take the bag off if you don’t want to slip it over your head. There’s also a wide range of adjustment on the strap so you can alter it to the length most comfortable for you. Other than that, there’s not too much going on with the outside of the bag.
